Ideally, flower beds should be at slightest 5 or 6 feet thick.

Indoor gardening: supplies to get you started

Starting an indoor garden does require a little preparation. Your space and lighting will likely be the biggest factors determining what supplies you'll need to get your garden growing. Here, we'll take a look at some basic and special needs supplies.

The basics

No matter what type of indoor garden you're planning, you'll need these supplies for each of them.

  • Surface protection. Use drop cloths or plastic trays under your garden pots and planters to protect your surfaces from water damage and unsightly soil spills.
  • Good soil. A good quality, loose potting soil should contain all the nutrients your houseplants will need for at least eight to 10 weeks. Plants growing for longer time periods may require some fertilization; add a water-soluble fertilizer at a recommended rate for your plant every few weeks. You can also add some nutrients to soil by sprinkling pots with compost or fish emulsion.
  • Containers. Other than the plants themselves, one of the other key components in your home garden will be your plant containers. Choose containers big enough for their particular plants and make sure they drain well; standing water at container bases can cause deadly root rot. Plant tropical plants in plastic containers, which retain humidity better than clay or terra cotta containers.
  • Distilled water. Tap water can contain mineral deposits or harmful pH levels that can damage plants. Instead, water your plants with purified distilled water.
  • Ventilation. All plants benefit from air flow, so position them near windows or oscillating fans. Do make sure plants are not exposed to a direct air flow for too long; if they are, they'll likely dry.
  • Natural pesticides. To keep your family and pets safe, combat houseplant pests with natural pesticides such as dish soap, alcohol, and hot peppers.

The special needs: lighting

Some houseplants will survive and thrive in simple pots placed in open, undisturbed areas of indirect sunlight. For these areas, you'll need the basic supplies listed above. Some homes, though, might not have the large, low-traffic spaces indoor gardens demand; instead, you might find your garden fits best in a relatively dry unused closet or basement, where you'll need to install special lighting.

  • Lighting. Some indoor gardeners maintain fluorescent lighting is a fine substitution for natural or incandescent light; other indoor gardeners claim the pricier HID, or high intensity discharge, lighting is the real way to go.

HID lights are the same kind of energy efficient, industrial lights used in street and parking lot lights; the bulbs turn electricity into a usable light and energy source for plants. HID lights for home use are scaled-down and produced with the same commercial parts used in industrial HID lights for durability and longevity.

The size of your garden and garden space will determine what HID bulb wattage you'll need; most plants will sit a foot off the floor in a container, and most HID fixtures will hand about a foot down from the ceiling. For small rooms with 10 to 40 square feet of floor space, one 400 watt HID lighting system should be sufficient. Larger spaces should do well with a 600 or 1,000 watt HID lighting system.
  • Light movers. While not typically necessary, light movers can certainly improve light dispersion around your garden. Electronic movers should be mounted securely to the ceiling. You can also use rope or chain pulleys to adjust the height of your lights.

Rare Titan to flower in Ubud’s Botanic Garden

The new BOTANIC GARDEN UBUD proudly announces it’s success in growing several species of Titans - in Indonesian, "bunga bangkai" – (bunga means flower, while bangkai means corpse or cadaver) - or in scientific terms Amorphophallus titanium. One Titan Arum - from Sumatra - developed it’s big bloom which is to flowering only some days. Two others are close to inflorescene within days.

The Titan is considered as the biggest unbranched flower plant on the planet with flowers becoming as high as 2,70 m. Our flowers though are much smaller so far.

The "fragrance" of the inflorescence resembles rotting meat, attracting carrion-eating beetles and Flesh Flies (family Sarcophagidae) that pollinate it.

The titan arum only grows in the wild in the equatorial rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia. It was first discovered there in 1878 by Italian botanist Odoardo Beccari. The plant flowers only infrequently in the wild and even more rarely when cultivated. It first flowered in cultivation at the Royal Botanic Gardens, at Kew in London, in 1889, with around 60 cultivated blossoms since then. The first documented flowerings in the U.S. were at New York Botanical Garden in 1937 and 1939. The number of cultivated plants has increased in recent years, and it is not uncommon for there to be five or more flowering events in gardens around the world in a single year.

How To Build a Swing Set

Children love to swing and swinging can keep them occupied for hours on those long summer days. Metal swing sets can rust and fall apart after one or two summers of use. However, a well built wooden swing set can last for years and complement your landscaping as well. They are also heavier and less likely to tip when larger children swing high into the air. This increases the years of use your children play on a swing set. How do you build a swing set?

1. Cut your 12-foot 1x6 treated lumber into half making two 6-foot pieces. These will provide stability between the upright legs of your swing set.

2. Drill eight holes in your main beam this is the 12-foot 4x4. These are where you will put the eyebolts to attach the swings. From each end, the first bolt should be about 17-inches in from the end. Each remaining bolt should be about 17-inches apart.

3. Drill two holes in each upright and in the side of the main beam where you will use the steal braces to attach the main beam to the upright leg. Use a permanent marker to indicate where you need to drill the holes by laying the steel braces on the wood.

4. Install the eight six-inch eyebolts into the main beam. The eye should be on the bottom to hang the swings. Put a washer on before you put the nut on to prevent the bolt from working its way through the beam. Tighten the nuts. It is easier to install these on the ground then it is up in the air.

5. Lay your upright legs, two 10-foot, 4x4s on the ground at approximately a 45-degree angle. Lay the steel trapezoid shaped brackets on the leg ends and adjust the angle so the bracket doesn't overhang. Use your 3-inch nails to attach the bracket to the upright legs. Flip the legs over and attach another bracket to the other side. Lay your six-foot 1x6 across the legs where it fits without much overhang. Use your 3-inch nails to attach the board to each leg. Repeat these steps for the other set of legs.

6. Bolt a steel brace to the main beam using two 6-inch bolts in the holes you drilled earlier. Secure the bolts with a washer and a nut. Repeat this step on the other end of the main beam. Flip the main beam over and repeat these steps to attach steel braces to the other side on both ends.

7. Bolt the other end of the steel brace to the legs that you attached together earlier. Use two six-inch bolts secured by washers and nuts. Repeat on both sides and both ends.

8. Tip the swing set upright onto the legs. Attach the "S" hook to the eye of the eight eyebolts you installed earlier. Hang your swings from the "S" hooks. Use your pliers to tighten the "S" hooks so the swings cannot unhook. Start swinging and have fun.
